Tea In Situ: Malibu Line – November 2

Each gathering in our contemporary tea ceremony series brings moments of peace, and contemplation, and connection through traditional Japanese tea and wagashi in an art or design environment. The second edition in our series will be held at artist Lita Albuquerque's Malibu Line, which is featured in our fifth issue.

Malibu Line is an iteration of Albuquerque's ephemeral pigment earthwork, an ultramarine blue powdered pigment in a shallow-dug trench between tufts of dried grass toward the horizon. Through a subtle optical illusion, the line both spatially and symbolically links land to sky, and sky to the ocean horizon beyond. Albuquerque develops pieces that become somatic experiences of place, drawing our attention to a relationship outside of ourselves and to the land. In this profound, stunning setting, the contemplative ritual of leaf tea and wagashi meets the artist's meditative intervention on the land.

Japanese wagashi confectionery and two varieties of traditional Japanese green tea will be served by Kashi Amairo. In crafting wagashi, she aims to convey the fleeting beauty of each season and the enduring spirit of the Japanese tradition.
